TIPS FOR MAKING EASY PRETZEL BITES

If you’ve only had these delicious appetizers from a restaurant, you’ll be amazed how easy they are homemade. With just a few easy steps you’ll have the perfect soft pretzels. Here are a few step-by-step tips to keep the recipe as hassle-free as possible!

  1.  Start by combining the two dough ingredients in a stand mixer. Use a spatula to make sure it all combines and there is no flour left on the side. Once they are combined put a dough hook on your stand mixer to knead the dough. You can tell the dough is done kneading when it forms a smooth ball and starts to pull away from the sides.
  2. Before you start to shape the dough into pretzel bites, sprinkle flour over the dough and over your work surface. This will keep the dough from sticking.
  3. Once you’ve cut the dough into bites, start boiling water. Add the baking soda to the warm water and stir it in. You want to make sure the baking soda is fully dissolved before putting the pretzel in.
  4. Dip each bite into the soda bath, using a slotted spoon. Be sure to let the Pretzel Bites drip dry before putting them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. You should only have to bake the pretzels for 8-10 minutes. You’ll know they’re done when the bites are golden brown.
  6. For the salt you can use kosher salt or sea salt. Just make sure whatever you use it is a coarse salt that will be visible.

VARIATIONS ON EASY PRETZEL BITES

  • Cheesy Pretzel Bites: If you love soft Pretzel Bites from the mall then you know nothing goes better with them than a creamy cheese sauce. To make your own homemade cheese sauce combine 2 ¼ cups whole milk, ¼ cup unsalted butter, ¼ cup flour, and 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese. Melt all these ingredients in the microwave, then mix them together, and add salt and pepper to taste. You can also make a Spicy Jalapeño Queso Dip. Add 1 diced Jalapeño and 2 tablespoons hot sauce to the pretzel cheese dip. Drizzle the cheese sauce over the Pretzel Bites, or put it out in a bowl for dipping.
  • Sweet Pretzel Bites: Next time you make delicious, soft Pretzel Bites use sweet coatings to make a delicious dessert. After baking your soft pretzels dip each bite into melted butter and then into a cinnamon sugar mixture to make Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel Bites. You can also make a brown sugar coating to put over the bites for even sweeter soft pretzels.
  • Full-size pretzels: Instead of making small Pretzel Bites, you can use this same pretzel recipe to make regular sized pretzels. When you cut the dough into six long strips, don’t cut those strips into bites. Instead, twist the dough into a classic pretzel shape. Start by rolling the dough strip, then put it in a U shape and cross the ends of the U. Twist each end of the dough over itself again. Keep an end of the dough in each hand and bring it down to meet the bottom of the U. Your dough should now be in a pretzel shape. Put the pretzel in boiling water and baking soda, then bake as usual.
