Banana bread is all well and good, but if you’ve never had applesauce bread you’ve been missing out. Rich, flavorful, filling and moist, this is a quick bread recipe that works whether you’re grabbing some for breakfast, enjoying a slice for a fancy brunch, or even eating as an after dinner treat.

How to make Applesauce Bread

Our recipe replaces some of the ingredients found in other applesauce breads and adds some spices to give the bread a bit of a kick. Instead of using sugar, or going the unsweetened route, we used agave. Instead of using all-purpose flour, we used whole wheat flour. And, finally, we snuck in a pinch of allspice that just adds a little something.

Start out by mixing your apple, a pinch of the cinnamon, agave and lemon juice in a bowl and then set it aside for later. In a separate bowl, whisk together your dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, allspice, the rest of the cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt) and then set that aside as well. In a large bowl, mix together your wet ingredients (oil, egg whites, sugar, applesauce, and vanilla) until it’s thick, making sure to scrape the mixture off the sides of the bowl so that none gets away.

Now, take the wet and dry ingredients and combine them, but make sure not to mix them too much. Fold in your apple slices and then pour the mixture into a loaf pan. Cook until you can poke a toothpick into it and it comes out clean. Once it’s finished baking let it sit out on a wire rack to cool off before eating.

ADDITIONS

If you want to some more texture in your applesauce bread, say “no” to the chocolate chips and “yes” to these tasty add-ins.

  • Nuts: to get some chunky, crunchy texture in your bread, try stirring in chopped pecans.
  • Raisins: raisins add sweetness and are deliciously chewy.
  • Apple butter: Once your bread has cooled, try spreading some apple butter over it. Apple butter is sweet and delicious while still being fairly good for you.

STORAGE

  • Store: You can keep it at room temperature as long as it is in an airtight container.
  • Freeze: You can wrap it in plastic wrap and let it live in the freezer for up to 4 months. To thaw it, let it sit at room temperature.

What a jolly tasty sounding recipe… I’ve never heard of apple sauce bread but can totally imagine how well it works in terms of flavour and texture.

I made this (with a few tweaks) today since I had applesauce to use up and it turned out great! The applesauce was sweetened so I didn’t use the brown sugar, added chocolate chips and walnuts instead of chopped apple, and upped the cinnamon & added cloves. The bread came out moist and the kitchen smelled heavenly.
